This Victorian school building is located in North London. The main aim of this project was to bring this locally important landmark back into sustainable long-term use. The brief from the developer was to transform this former school into residential homes with a respectful approach to the building’s history. To achieve this we drew from Scandinavian and modernist influences into the design of the interiors. The open-plan living area encourages the natural light to flood in through the floor-length windows and bounce between the subtle colour palette and natural materials.
The former school building is split into five separate three-bed homes, all featuring a mezzanine, balcony and garden. Throughout this scheme, there is a constant crossing of boundaries between interior and exterior space, which has evolved naturally by responding to the needs of this historic building. It was important to incorporate the feeling of tranquillity into the scheme so the user can refuge from the chaotic nature of London.
